Information to consumers re use of non-genuine cartridges

(2018 ruling)

https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/hp-to-compensate-printer-customers has some important information in favour of consumers.

The article states that ‘HP has admitted that by not disclosing to consumers that these printers, or the firmware update, included technology preventing the use of certain non-HP ink cartridges, it was likely to have breached the Australian Consumer Law by engaging in false, misleading or deceptive conduct’.

In the article, the ACCC says ‘Businesses must disclose all important information about their products, including if there are any restrictions on the use of non-genuine parts or refills’.

So, importantly, for consumers who have a printer that rejects compatible cartridges, they can complain to the retailer or manufacturer (not just HP) to obtain a satisfactory remedy for their purchase, or they can complain to the Office of Fair Trading in their state or to the federal ACCC.
